Zagreb, 14 October 2021 – AI2FUTURE conference in Kraš Auditorium for two days, 14 and 15.10, brings together the Croatian AI community of companies and startups that develop products, services and solutions based on artificial intelligence. The annual gathering of the community is also the annual conference of the CroAI association, which presented the research of the AI scene in Croatia, AI Landscape 2.0. The goal of the association is to position Croatia as the leading AI nation on the global map. Among the key topics discussed was the position of artificial intelligence as a key strategic development determinant and the need to adopt regulations for the national AI Sandbox. The program of the second day will deal with successful business-technological examples.

In the introductory lecture on the first day, Mislav Malenica, President of the CroAI Association, commented on the activities of the association whose goal is to gather the community, create AI projects and build a better future. pointed out that in the last year the number of members of the association has grown to 215 members. The association has carried out many activities; for example, more than 30,000 people in Croatia took Elements of AI, the world’s best online course in computer science. Together with Germany and France, the Croatian association also participated in the founding of the European AI Forum, an annual gathering of European entrepreneurs, academics and politicians. Marijana Šarolić Robić (CroAI) presented the latest initiative of the association – the establishment of Adria AI Think Thank, which will bring together experts from various industries and fields and through dialogue to detect key topics related to artificial intelligence and its use for society. Dejan Iličić, director of the Development Agency of the City of Lipik, presented the AI Center Lipik, which is funded by the European Union and is funded by the European Union. Lipik intends to become a center for the development of artificial intelligence in Croatia and to open an AI campus in the future. Daniel Avdagič (AV Living Lab) spoke about the activities of the Slovenian laboratory that connects numerous industries, advanced technologies, data, content and people into one ecosystem with physical and digital infrastructure for the development of revolutionary solutions for the future of mobility.

Tomislav Vračić (Microsoft) presented to the participants the concept of Data Driven Nation applied by the Baltic countries. The concept is based on three principles: data democracy and public accessibility, data should enable citizen engagement and data-based innovation. Latvia has made data available through the Latvian open data portal and turned it into the foundation of innovative solutions, which has attracted many investors. For example, in 2016, Microsoft, in collaboration with the University of Latvia, opened the Microsoft Innovation Center, and Roche invested in a big data pilot project on gene analysis. Estonia has also focused on innovation, and the Government’s initiative to make data publicly available has resulted in more than 2,500 eGovernment services for citizens. Milly Doolan (CroAI and Euronavigator) presented the contribution of CroAI AI to the act of the European Commission.

During the panel discussion, Jan Štedul (CroAI) moderated a conversation with Goran Dautović (Project 3 Mobility – Rimac), Martina Dragičević (A1), Bojan Jerbić (FSB), Mislav Malenica (CroAI) and Ivana Vukov (Advisor to the Prime Minister). ). They discussed how to create a national AI sandbox, a secure environment for the development and application of artificial intelligence, which is flexible enough to create new startups and globally competitive solutions. All actors agreed that Croatia urgently needs a plan and that there is an interest of all stakeholders involved, from the Government and the academic community to business, to adopt the necessary regulations for Sandbox. It is important that the regulation is based on an understanding of technology and that it provides a legal framework that will not stifle, but encourage innovation.

Heidi Chenan (CroAI) presented AI Landscape 2.0. Croatia is just experiencing an AI boom – in 2020, 72 startups developed solutions based on artificial intelligence, and in 2021 we reached the number of 115 startups. Last year, startups earned more than 3.5 billion kuna, while this year the amount of investments exceeded 5 billion kuna. Users are mostly found in the IT sector, telecommunications, e-commerce and banking. 65% of products, services and solutions are placed on the markets of the European Union, followed by North America with 27% and Central and Eastern Europe with 24% share. More than 60% of the capital is domestic capital, while the share of foreign capital is 11%, and 27% have mixed sources of financing. Private capital predominates (81%), and the Croatian AI scene bases its connection with foreign countries mostly on networking (associations, clusters) and international cooperation. Compared to 2020, the share of women founders of startups is growing (from 15% to 17% in 2021), and women are an integral part of the AI team in 50% of respondents. As a challenge, startups point out that it is difficult for them to find AI experts (64.52%), AI sellers (61.29%) and employees abroad (50%).

In 92% of cases, talent is found through networking, and more than half rely on job advertisements (53%) and universities (52%). There is significant room for improving collaboration with universities and academia because in the survey, 42% of startups surveyed said they do not collaborate with academia. After Zagreb, most startups are based in Split, Lipik, Osijek and Rijeka.

Artificial intelligence has become an area of strategic importance and a key driver of economic development and can provide solutions to many societal challenges, but it is necessary to build an ecosystem that will support development. At the panel discussion, Krešimir Žmak (Infobip), Ratko Mutavdžić (Microsoft), Davor Runje (CISEX) and Damir Sabol (Photomath) discussed how to lay a stronger foundation for cooperation between all key stakeholders – AI community, academia and the state – in building it. ecosystem. They agreed that the role of leading domestic companies, in addition to the placement of top products, is to educate people and that it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with academia and universities in the form of research projects. They also pointed out that the challenge of hiring domestic talent became even greater during the pandemic as a large number of domestic AI experts took advantage of the opportunity to work remotely for foreign companies.

During the first day of the program, Croatian AI League awards were presented. The topic was AI – support for the protection and research of bottlenose dolphins in the Adriatic, and the task was to create an algorithm that will automatically recognize and identify dolphins. The best students – participants were awarded gold medals. As part of the conference, a CroAI pitch was held, at which selected TOP 10 AI startups from Croatia and the region were presented. The best team was chosen by a jury composed of investors, representatives of European venture capital funds, WC funds, which combined have hundreds of millions of euros of investment capital. The winners are Farseer and Cidrani with the same number of points, and the third place went to Ascalia.
The conference is supported in partnership by A1 and Photomath as TOP partners and Ascalia, BonsAI, Infobip, Megatrend, Business Intelligence, Robotiq and TIS.

Each one of us has their very important moment of the year. To us in CroAI, that is when we all get together at our annual AI2FUTURE conference. This year, it’s happening on October 14-15 in the factory of chocolate dreams or, at least once a year, the factory of artificial intelligence ideas – Kraš Zagreb.
The circumstances we live in currently have taken away from us way too many opportunities to mingle in person. That robbed us of the positive energy and creativity, as they simply do not happen online. Therefore, do not waste another moment! Save the date(s) in your calendar and join us for two days in October in sharing ideas, meeting new people, and seeing best AI examples from Croatia and beyond.
We surveyed the Croatian scene again to upgrade the AI landscape and add all relevant companies, institutions and organizations on the map, everyone that is marching towards the tech future together, and we will showcase the AI Landscape 2.0. Furthermore, we’ve gathered all the main actors in developing the national AI strategy. And no, we’re not talking about the document, but the specific thought exchange from people in the industry and the government, as we want to find out what needs to be done and by whom to create space (infrastructure, regulation, support, system) in which creating new technology will be a welcomed opportunity. We’ll talk with Infobip, Photomath, CISEx, just to name a few…
That “space” includes one very important agenda – AI sandbox. If you’re thinking of a rectangular playground filled with sand where kids play and build sandcastles, yup, something like that, but for grownups and real life. We believe that it makes sense for us as a country and industry to choose a direction or area in which organizations (companies, academia, associations, etc.) can “play” with applications and algorithms and create new innovative solutions. And yes, that area does have to be enclosed, as in, have rules one must play by. The rules that protect those involved, but
also give enough freedom to be creative. That is why we will hear the examples from Austria, Slovenia, Norway, but also our own courtyard, so we can create a solid basis for conversation and conclusions.
Last year, Robotiq.ai sat on the throne of the first ever CroAI pitching session. This brought them to EUR 900k of investment, and yet, it was only the first time we’ve organized something like that. So, just imagine what awaits the winner of this year’s pitch that will be chosen by the jury of 10 European VC funds and local investors among the 10 pre-selected AI startups!
The second day of conference will be the crème de la crème of technology. Like every year, only the premieres will be on the stage. The chosen companies will talk what they did in the last 12 months and what’s coming up and give concrete examples of their work. Many interesting things are brewing, but we will not reveal everything just yet. Stay tuned, as the schedule will come out soon!
Of course, this spectacular event would not happen without the support of our loving partners: Photomath & A1 (TOP partnerr), Ascalia, BonsAI, Robotiq, Megatrend, Poslovna inteligencija, and TIS group… for now.
We hope we got your juices flowing. If yes, get your ticket ASAP, while we still have the early bird price!

Interview with Ratko Mutavdzic, CEE Regional Technology Officer at Microsoft and AI2FUTURE Organizing Committee co-chair.

Why is important for Microsoft to become a partner to the AI community?

Globally, scientists and organizations are facing unprecedented challenges to solve the issue of climate change and a disastrous loss of biodiversity, while continuously feeding a growing population and protecting water supplies. Developing sustainable solutions demands the fast collection and analysis of various data sets. This can be a too difficult task for small organizations, averting them from scaling their solutions and increasing their impact. To tackle this problem, Microsoft is empowering people and institutions with cloud and AI tools to solve those challenges.

People and organizations are now using AI to gather, process and scrutinise data at scale and speed which was unthinkable of even a decade ago. Microsoft is dedicated to accelerating advanced solutions and creating a more sustainable future with new open source apps that anyone can use, partnerships to fast-track development, and grants to empower organizations around the world. This way, everyone can benefit from AI, and together we can create a better future.

How can AI startups collaborate with Microsoft?

Since 2018, Microsoft for Startups works with select accelerators and VCs to support startups and startup ecosystems world-wide. Microsoft for Startups is a free, global program dedicated to helping B2B startups successfully scale their companies. Microsoft provides them with access to powerful technology including Azure and GitHub Enterprise coupled with a streamlined path to selling alongside Microsoft and our global partner ecosystem. The program delivers access to technology, go-to-market and community benefits that helps startups grow their customer and revenue base. Startups in our program secured over a $1BN in sales opportunities with the average deal size over six figures last year alone.

Startups are an indisputable innovation engine, and Microsoft is partnering with founders and investors to help propel their growth. Funded startups interested in applying to the program can ask their enabling organization for the Microsoft for Startups package sign-up details unique to their organization.

How can Microsoft help Croatia to become an important player in the AI field?

By helping Croatian AI companies, but also Croatian authorities, cultivate a responsible AI-ready culture throughout their businesses and put principles into place from implementation to governance with practices, tools, and technologies built on multidisciplinary research, shared learning, and leading innovation. With help of partners, Microsoft AI drives innovation in areas such as managing traffic, boosting safety, improving urban life, storing data and making it accessible, streamlining remote work, optimizing air quality etc. Such improvements enabled by AI are a key strategic point and a driver of economic development in the EU.

Microsoft collaborated on the document of Croatian Employers Association (HUP) “Artificial Intelligence Potential for Croatia” in which it has provided guidelines for goals and usage of solutions based on AI to propel its introduction and implementation in such fields of life. During AI2Future we have heard from experts from Germany, South Africa, Israel, Sweden and Serbia talk about their countries’ AI strategy, and Microsoft is a strong partner in reaching their AI potential, just like in Croatia.

When will we see the first driverless (level 5) car and what are the next steps?

The major carmakers such as GM, Daimler, BMW and Audi promising SAE Level 5 autonomous driving by sometime in 2021. Clearly, fully autonomous cars are five to seven years into the future. But based on the multi-billion-dollar investment the automakers have made, we believe it’s possible for the industry to create a future for autonomous driving that’s both safe for consumers and profitable for the industry.

What are a major obstacles in the road to driverless cars? Driver behaviour

The final enemy is the building up of the driving behaviour, which can learn all driving situations on the basis of few data, evolve in real-time and make deterministic proven and reproducible decisions. Currently such AI technology does not exist in production. We address similar problems in my Robots Go Mental company, but we are at the beginning in relation to such complex topic.

Who’s winning the Self-Driving Car Race? The race to build autonomous cars has been on for several years. That is the intermediate run and it’s still in hyperdrive, Googles Waymo leads the run but Daimler leads the following autonomous driving pack.

Is competiveness or cooperation the key to success in this filed?

It’s both, the question is between who, car maker and tier 1 supplier and in what order. Brookings adds that the technology-intensive aspect of autonomous cars has attracted tech companies that believe they have much to offer. However, if the carmakers act correctly and decisively, the tech groups may not maintain that leadership. Carmakers must team with leading computer and data science companies as close partners to catch up. After all, the race for autonomous driving is on because the future of the car industry depends on it.

Which Business model will arise with autonomous cars?

Mobility game changer, as car shearing and mobility services they probably will push out the public traffic in the cities.

Where are potential for development and investments? The car maker, a traffic companies and investors will change his way to make business. An entire new field of case law and automobile insurance will also develop as inevitable accidents and other disputes arise as autonomous cars make their way into the market.
How do ethics figure into this, what are some of the biggest ethical concerns that we can expect in the near term? There is a big hustle around topics such as the self-driving car that needs to decide whether to protect the passenger or the pedestrian.

In the longer term, we will need the ethical rules for the use of AI, now it is too early. The question to protect the passenger or the pedestrian is wrong. For now, public support and safety have to be addressed and solved by the car makers not case by case. The more transparent the better. In the end, safety saves lives.

Can you tell us a little bit about company where you work and what are some key technologies you are developing, and partners you are working with?

What will you share with audience at AI2FUTURE conference in Zagreb?

I will discuss our thesis about: “Fully autonomous driving: the reality or a fiction, can human driving behaviour be replaced by autonomous driving agent and how?” This talk address these challenges. It points out which technologies can be used. It addresses the intelligent and autonomous decisions in real time and show how a few of these capabilities can look like.

Tu će biti predstavnici znanstveno-istraživačkih grupa: Jan Šnajder i Ivana Podnar Žarko s FER-a, Bojan Jerbić s FSB-a, Markus Schatten, Igor Tomičić, Bogdan Okreša Đurić s FOI-a i Marko Horvat s TZV-a.
